Donates a portion of paid service to charity

LAMBERTVILLE, MI -- A local accounting firm is doing their part to help members of the military and their families: they're doing their taxes for free! On top of that, they're giving ten dollars of every paid tax return to local military charities. It’s a great help for the families of soldiers like Pfc. Aaron Savage, whose grandmother, Michelle, says he had no illusions about joining the army.
“He knew, before he signed on the dotted line, that he was going to Iraq,” she says.
He's been there for the last six months. Michelle Savage says it's great when someone recognizes the sacrifices our fighting men and women make.
“These guys go out and give their life for their country, and I think it's wonderful when someone can give back to them,” she says; someone like Bill Huckaby, at Collins Accounting Service.
“Nobody can do everything,” he says, “but everyone can do something. There's a lot of military families out there in need, we had the opportunity to do something and we decided we wanted to, so that's exactly why we did it.”
Since late February, his firm has prepared tax forms for more than 150 troops and their families for free. They're also giving ten dollars from every paid return to local charities.
“The first is Heroes in Action, which is on Glendale, the second is Vets Incorporated in Monroe, Michigan. They are both military outreach centers that help families,” Huckaby says.
Huckaby's daughter is in the US Air Force. He says gestures like this shouldn't be out of the ordinary.
“It would be terrific if everybody just took that extra second to think of what these people go through on a day by day basis and got involved,” he says.
Huckaby says his firm, Collins and Associates, plans to do free military taxes next year, too, but instead of starting in late February, next time they'll start first thing January.
